This improvisational quilt grew with absolutely no plan. Matching one color with another, one block to the next then filling in the spaces. Never knowing the outcome is the beauty of my piecing.

Ruby Extravaganza 40th Anniversary

From afar, this quilt appears to be a simple red rectangle framed by white. However, when closer, more complex forms appear and details begin to blossom. The Arizona Quilters Guild is much the same. As a whole, we are a very straightforward community of talented quilters. We divide into chapters, each with a unique personality. Delving even deeper, each multifaceted member is revealed in detail with a spectrum of talents and specialties. AQG is an invaluable platform to see and share these qualities with each other. Like the valuable ruby, we are strong and powerful - characteristics which continually show in our quilting.

Judge’s Recognition - Most outstanding Quilt in Show – “Un-biased Nation”

This improvised piece represents America and the values of diversity, inclusion, and creativity in the face of adversity. The fabric comes from local shops across the country – some scrap fabric and some treasured prints. Representing the varying shades of this country’s people and the spectrum of opinions we hold dear, it symbolizes how our country is greatest when the pieces work together. It has flaws, but in it I see my friends and colleagues in the quilting community, sharing stories, and learning from each other. Most importantly, like America, it remains a work in progress.

The Chicago River.

Tall buildings observe from above.

Bridges seamlessly connect the north and south, east and west.

The park awaits play and relaxation.

Lake Michigan calms the shore and the people.

Two hearts joyfully beat in this kind of town.

Although I live in the desert of Arizona, my two hearts live in Chicago.

Whether you glance through a 45th window, stroll along a newly cemented walkway or glide atop its currents, the Chicago River seems to keep the people and the city afloat. It’s a boundless link for people, ideas and creativity reaching far beyond its banks.

To me, it serves to nourish the growth of my children who prosper in its surroundings and enjoy the community it connects
